Why Do Windows Fog on the Inside?
When fog or water droplets form on the inside surface of a window, indoor air is carrying more moisture than the glass can hold at its current temperature. As warm air touches the cold pane, it cools quickly. Once it reaches its dew point, moisture changes from vapor into visible droplets.
This is most common in winter, when heated indoor air is warmer and often more humid than the outdoor air. Outside condensation develops when exterior air is warm and humid while the outside glass remains cooler than the air’s dew point. This often occurs during humid summer mornings or after a cool, clear night. A highly efficient window may keep less heat from the home from reaching the exterior glass, allowing that glass to stay cool enough for dew to form.
This is similar to dew forming on grass. It usually clears as the outdoor temperature rises and sunlight reaches the glass. Exterior condensation does not damage the window, and it is not a sign that water is entering the home.
There are exceptions. If water is getting behind exterior trim, collecting around the frame, or appearing after wind-driven rain, the issue is not ordinary fog. Those symptoms deserve an inspection of the window installation, flashing, drainage paths, and exterior sealants.
Fog Between Window Panes Signals a Different Problem
Fog, haze, or streaks between two panes of glass are the clearest sign of a failed insulated glass unit. Modern double-pane and triple-pane windows are built with sealed spaces between the panes. Those spaces are often filled with insulating gas and protected by a perimeter seal.
Over time, seals can fail because of age, repeated expansion and contraction, impact damage, poor installation, or ordinary material wear. Once the seal is compromised, humid air can enter the space between panes. Moisture condenses there, where it cannot be wiped away from either side.

Why Some Rooms Fog More Than Others

Bedrooms can develop condensation overnight because doors are closed, people are breathing in the room, and air circulation is limited.
Sunrooms, glass enclosures, and enclosed porches require particular attention because they naturally contain more glass and experience greater temperature changes. For example, a seasonal enclosure may behave differently from a fully conditioned sunroom. Neither approach is automatically better. When Fogging Calls for a Professional Evaluation
It is reasonable to monitor occasional indoor or outdoor condensation. It is time to ask for help when moisture repeatedly damages trim, mold develops around a window, cold drafts are noticeable, or fog is trapped between panes.
Also pay attention to windows that are hard to open, have cracked glass, show rot around the frame, or allow noticeable heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. These issues can overlap. Replacing a failed pane may solve a visibility problem, while a broader window upgrade may be the more durable answer for an aging opening.
